In 2004, I took a Literature of Horror class at Rutgers University. After reading some of Edgar Allen Poe’s horror stories, I excitedly began to write a horror story of my own. Poe’s writing was creepy, right up my alley. Years later, when I began to revise the story, I decided the horror story I told wasn’t enough…what this story needed was a good mystery. As a child, some of my favorite books included the Agatha Christie mysteries, so, remembering how she “wow’d” readers with her plot twists and turns, I set out to create my own mystery. And so, the horror story, originally titled Dear Amy, turned into The Secret of Kolney Hatch.
